Spring 2014

Logging quite a bit of time in studio between drawings and oil painting last week.

Tuesday 2/11
Starting on a large 38"  x  28"  panel today.

Back to spending alot of time painting.....have just finished the 3 large panels, but thinking of going back to the Notch and reworking!  It has been a long time since I have worked realistically......it has been a challenge, but a good one!  Though my frustration level has been high!

Residency Summary~ The first series of my work was based on memorials and memorializing my coworkers from United Airlines, questions to consider: What constitutes a memorial? What happens when a viewer encounters a memorial? How did artists convey a memorial? Artists to look at: Hans Haache, Maya Lin, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Martha Rosler, Doris Salcedo and Fischel and Weiss. Sonya Pentz had set up a memorial in her space Nina Early’s work had to do with memories but also had a connection to memorials. Pamela Drix’s presentation was a tribute to the local Indians of her community in New York. Through the critiques some questions that were brought up: Arrangements of cemeteries Why and how people mourn Did the imagery evoke a sense of commemoration? Did it have to resonate with 9/11? These were some questions asked. The most successful of my work was the aquatint with the subtle tonal shifts and interruption of the image. After thinking about this project I concluded that the subject matter might be too personal and hinder the critiques I would receive. The second body of work consisted of landscape and geological themes. Things I plan on exploring when working in the studio: The process and iconography of things in nature Views from a distance Aerial perspectives Using color and form as a metaphor Abstraction of form The work I would like to focus on for the semester would be exploring meditative spaces and the criteria for those spaces. With that being said I will also think about what leads one to a meditative space: chaos, trauma and over stimulation that exists in our fast paced culture just to name a few. I will be exploring how to translate my imagery into paintings, drawings and monotypes? My research may lead me into different avenues such as how color, form and spatial references affect the psyche. Another avenue of investigation is how does nature and the world around us affects our sense of well-being and how can we use these elements to create a mood. Some artists I will be looking at who I feel their work is meditative through their imagery, use of color and form: Degas-Monotypes Mark Rothko Giorgio Morandi Agnes Martin Robert Ryman Adolph Gottlieb Clyfford Still Richard Diebenkorn Morris Louis Helen Frankenthaler Barnett Newman Hans Hofmann I have set up a format to follow with my work: -Work on drawings, paintings and monotypes with a rectangular format possibly an elongated rectangle -Pushing color with a limited palette and using earth tones -Explore as many references as possible, dig deeper -Work on drawings for the month -Set up a date with Clara for hands on studio time -I have also set daily schedule for myself in the studio Dayna Talbot Summary of Spring Residency 2014 The first series of my work was based on memorials and memorializing my coworkers from United Airlines, questions to consider: What constitutes a memorial?
